  • What is the instruction format?

    The video-based lessons are all pre-recorded with a deaf instructor demonstrating signs, often accompanied by text captions and modules for additional support. You can watch them at your own convenience.

  • How long is the class course?

    Each online class (ASL I and ASL II) has eight lessons. Both are self-paced, allowing students to learn at their own speed and revisit lessons as needed.

  • How long will I have access to the videos?

    Lessons are available until December 17, 2026

  • Who can attend the online class?

    Anyone can attend these classes. Classes are geared for all ages, however, we do suggest an adult take the course with children under the age of 13 to help guide them through and keep their attention. Plus, it is much more fun to learn as a group!

  • Is it possible to become fluent solely through online classes?

    While online classes provide a strong foundation, achieving fluency often requires additional practice with native signers for conversational fluency.

  • Can this course be used for professional development, high school, or college credits?

    No. These classes are non-credit level courses. They are simply community classes in basic conversational American Sign Language.

  • How much does each course cost?

    Classes are free for everyone. However, we ask that you consider donating to the OSD Foundation. You can do so by visiting www.osdfoundation.net or by clicking on the ‘Donate Now!’ button at the top of the page.

  • How can I receive a certificate?

    Upon completing all eight lessons and quizzes, you will receive a certificate of attendance for this course. Remember that this certificate does not qualify/certify you to be an interpreter, teach ASL, or earn professional development/continuing education hours.

  • Do I need any special equipment?

    Typically, just a computer with a reliable internet connection. If you use your organization’s/company’s device, check with your technology department to ensure our site isn’t blocked.

  • Does enrollment in ASL I give me access to ASL II as well?

    No, you must enroll in both courses to gain access to both.
